Module 6: Internet and its importance to us.

Internet has played a vital role in our lives as a student, career-worker and as a person. With internet and the different websites that we can surf, it plays a major role in enhancing our learning. Internet has made our lives a lot easier because interaction can now happen through online. Our distance learning here in UP Open University is a testament that even if there is no actual interaction, the interaction among online students are dynamic. In terms of connection, yes, internet has made sure that we stay connected with our family and loved ones, even in work place at all times. Thanks to Skype, Viber, Facetime and the like.

Internet has many advantages, in terms of learning, there can be vast of information that we can search in the internet. To enhance our visual and auditory skills, there are many helpful sites that we can use to improve our skills. It is very accessible to all, for us, students, it’s more convenient to research more in the internet(though I still advocate in going to the library to search for books). For children, however, it pays to have an adult, teacher supervise them in their internet usage. We have to be vigilant in what they are viewing as this can be a big influence to their actions.

Which brings about the disadvantage of internet, because f its accessibility, if left unguarded, it may post risk in our young children. Good thing in this module though, it discussed the necessary elements to check if the website is appropriate for us to use:

Accuracy, wherein the data and information posted are factual and true in every sense.

Authority there is ownership and responsibility for the design of the website and of course, authority projects credibility.

Usefulness- it is a site that promotes learning and interaction to the user.

Currentness-obviously, the site should be updated and in touch with the current happenings of the world so as to inform the user as well.

Presentation- visually appealing yet appropriate for ever age. Links should be able to bring the user to every stage or phase that will help him/her engage in the website.

Thus, learning this helps me more to be observant in whatever site that I will now check into especially when I’m with my son and nephew. I don’t want them to expose them in activities that may promote too much violence or malicious content.

Again, it all boils down to to being a responsible internet user. If we know the purpose of why we are going to use the internet then it will be much easier for us to integrate technology like internet to our schooling. This will help our students appreciate technology and they will develop more critical thinking.

Module 5: Why I cried while listening to an audio material.

It is easy to take for granted a lot of things especially when what you use for studying are your eyes and not your ears. I must admit that the module for this week about Audio rekindled my interest in obtaining information through the use of audio materials.

I remember receiving a Harry Potter audio set and never listened to it because I’m more of a visual person, though I enjoy watching documentary shows with voice-over narration of course.

Studying audio materials for this week made me realize that audio is an essential part in one’s learning. Especially for my son to be able to repeat the information like letters and number, he has to listen to my voice.

I realize that one retains information visually and auditory. When I teach my son about different kinds of animals, it is inevitable that I don’t ask him about the sound that these animals make. For example, when I ask him, “Gio, show me the dog (while looking in the animal chart), and he would point it. And when I ask him, what does the sound of the dog? He would make an “arf, arf” sound and he would utter “meeow, meeow, moo moo, oink oink” sounds as well when I ask him about cat, cow, and pig.

I believe that we associate images from the sound that they produces and that retains in our minds. I also remember not attending a mass and I tried listening to a podcast, wow! what impact through just listening the voice of the preacher (from the Feast). And I found myself crying because he was able to touch my heart and I learned something from him.

And that is how powerful an audio material is, it can evoke emotion (from the sound, musical score in the movie), you learn more from the explanation of the narrator in every documentary, fairy tale, that you read or watch.

I haven’t experience audio feedback nor downloading excerpt from a website for any given talk but I’m sure that audio feedback provided by a teacher or facilitator will somehow help me improve my task because it’s more personal, they can expound on it.

So, yeah, I’m actually gonna listen to Harry Potter audio set now.

Cheers!

Module 4: Visually stimulating reading materials!

Module 4 which focused on visual materials through projected and non-projected materials were really one of the modules that I enjoyed reading so far. I was taught in the time where pictures, charts, posters, were commonly used in disseminating information. It was only in college that we were asked by our professors in doing portfolio works using computer.

As I have mentioned in my previous post/answers in the forum, visual materials plays in integral part in the student’s learning. As much as I love reading text, it is true that I love looking at pictures. It was a delight to read Archie comic books before because not only that my vocabulary is improved, their drawings were also funny, thus developing a “good eye” for artworks.

When it comes to memorizing things, yes, I also learned fast when, I do a chart. Again, when using these visual aids, it helps the students more to be connected with their lessons. It gives them time to really absorb the lesson.

I went to National Bookstore to buy the Philippine political map and a wave of nostalgia hit me. Maps, the periodic table were some of the visual aids we have used in high school and you can see that it is still very useful in providing information. Even if visual aids are used by the teacher to teach, we still learn from it when it comes to recitation. When the teacher asks the chemical name for example of “gold”, we would immediately check on the periodic table and say “Au”. Thus this helps in developing observation and at the same it retains in our minds the information about the text written in visual aids because of familiarization.

In terms of presentation, during college, it is more effective to show your pictures using projector. it intends to show the pictures visibly in a large audience. We are free to design our print material according to what we want in terms of what information we are going to include.

Now that I’m a mom and tutor to my nephew, I try to deliver learning aids that will keep them engage. Of course for the toddler, it would be charts, flash cards, as this should help him retain the image in his head. With my nephew, he’s now concentrated on using the tablets. The vacation was all over iPad and yes, it was hard for us to slow him down, but now it’s school time, it’s back to books!

This module has inspired me to go back to basics since I’m an old school, yet, it will still be nice to be techie as well. 🙂
